The Pit Bull's owner should be very consistent and make no exception when it comes to training. Sometimes, strong reprimands and repetitions are required. The Pit Bull owners say these dogs have a sense of humor. They tend to feel the owner's mood. Therefore, insistence in training is a must, especially, if you are dealing with a puppy. On the other hand, if your Pit Bull is doing well, never be sparing of praise.

When you hear something about Pit Bulls, it is more likely to be negative information. Mass media shows the image of vicious Pit Bulls attacking people. Few are aware of the fact that there were famous Pit Bulls who can be even called heroic. Several Pit Bulls are known to have shown outstanding courage and determination. Many Pit Bulls work as search and rescue dogs and save lives of people and animals.

Sgt. Stubby (1917-1926) is the first Pit Bull who was honored for his deeds by the rank of Sergeant in the United States Armed Forces. It is not surprising, considering he saved the lives of whole platoons by warning them about poisonous gas in 17 battles in which he participated. Sgt. Stubby was actually recognized for capturing a German spy.

One more hero Pit Bull who deserves being remembered and honored is Weela. She rescued 30 people, 29 dogs and 13 horses during a flood.

There are many more wonderful examples of the Pit Bull's bravery and loyalty. Pit Bulls also serve as therapy dogs for the elderly and disabled. If the mass media showed this bright side of the Pit Bull story and not only frightening incidents, the public would be less prejudiced against Pit Bulls.
